15 Life Lessons I Learned by 50 (That I Wouldn’t Have Believed in My 20s)

Here are some lessons I’ve learned during my half century on this planet:

  1. Be kind. The benefits of being kind–or at the very least courteous–far outweigh the effort you put in. Do random acts of kindness. Compliment someone. If a retail or food-service worker makes a mistake, be understanding and patient. Kind people live longer than unkind people.
  2. I know myself better than anyone else. I don’t let anyone else’s opinions control what I do, what I wear, or what I say. Other people’s opinions are suggestions–take them or leave them.
  3. Everyone else is as worried and insecure as you are. Some people just hide it better. It doesn’t mean that they are any smarter or better than you.
  4. Laugh it off. If you make a mistake, fall down, or do something dumb, just laugh it off. Other people (and you) will forget it a lot faster if you just let it roll off your back. EVERYONE makes dumb mistakes. Everyone. You aren’t alone, and you aren’t the biggest idiot in the world. Give yourself a break.
  5. “Fitting in” is highly overrated. Be you. Confidence is sexy. Besides, great leaders didn’t get where they are by following the crowd.
  6. Don’t stay in a bad relationship, even if it’s “for the kids.” Oftentimes, kids really thrive outside the bounds of a toxic relationship.
  7. It’s just stuff. Sure, stuff gets broken–oftentimes accidentally by people you love–and that’s annoying. But your stuff can be replaced. You can never erase the hurtful words you say to the person you love, because they broke your stuff. Stuff is never, ever as important as those you love.
  8. You’re probably a lot smarter than you give yourself credit for being.
  9. Don’t judge. You don’t know all the facts. That lady speeding down the road with her toddler unbuckled in the back seat may be panicked, heading for the hospital for an emergency that you can’t see. That “big kid” having a “tantrum” in the store may be on the autism spectrum, and is having a melt down, which he/she hates as much as you do. The fat lady in the bikini may have lost 100 lbs so far, and she’s pretty darn proud of what she’s done. Don’t shame people for smoking, drinking, or being fat. We all have our faults and bad habits. As a pretty famous guy is alleged to have said, “let he who is without sin cast the first stone.”
  10. Never lose your inner child. Dance. Sing. Skip. Tell poop jokes (not to strangers, though). Go down the slide. Bounce at the bouncy house, if the attendant says adults are welcome. This is an advantage to being older. When you’re 20, people often think you’re “too old” to do these things, but when a 50-something does them, it’s charming. And if people think it’s dumb, screw them. See #2 above.
  11. Don’t make major life decisions to please other people. Maybe your parents expect you to go to college, but you just want to go to trade school and become an auto mechanic, because that’s where your heart is. Or maybe (as in my case) your parents don’t want you to go to college, but you really want to be an attorney. Live life for YOU. The world needs good auto mechanics and good attorneys. It’ll all work out.
  12. Don’t beat yourself up about stuff. Do what you can to fix your mistakes, then move on. Guilt is only good for pushing you toward making things right again. After that, it becomes shame, and shame is a toxic substance which will eat you up inside. Same for worry.
  13. Enjoy life. Literally, stop to smell and admire the flowers. Wonder. Smile at strangers and see how many you can get to smile back. Have fun.
  14. Life goes by really, really fast. Live each day so that, at the end, you’re reveling in how amazing your life was, not regretting all the things you did or didn’t do.
  15. Life is better after 50.

The Virtues of Continues Improvement

In a video called “Why You Need to Fail”, CD Baby founder Derek Sivers describes the surprising results of a ceramics class.

On the first day, the instructor announced to his class that the students would be divided into two groups. Half of the students would only need to make one clay pot each during the semester. Their grades would depend on the perfection of that solitary pot.

The other half of the class would be graded simply by the weight of the pots they made during the semester. If they made 50 pounds of pots or more, they’d get an A. Forty pounds would earn a B; 30 pounds, a C; and so on. What they actually made was irrelevant. The instructor said he wouldn’t even look at their pots. He would simply bring his bathroom scale to the final day of class and weigh the students’ work.

At the end of the semester, an interesting thing had occurred. Outside observers of the class noted that the highest-quality pots had been made by the “quantity group”. They had spent the entire semester working as quickly as they could to make pots. Sometimes they succeeded, and sometimes they failed. Which each iteration, each experiment, they learned. From that learning they became better able to achieve the end goal: making high-quality clay pots.

By contrast, the group that made one object didn’t have the benefit of those failed iterations and didn’t learn quickly enough to perform at the same level as the “Quantity group”. They had spent their semester theorizing about what would make a “grade-A” clay pot but didn’t have the experience to execute that grandiose vision.

Taking the Initiative

a weird “best employee” strategy that I have yet to learn since I didn’t go to university nor college, I probably lost most important educative classes, unlike School which consists of barbaric education of forced religion and generalized occupancy, University in my thoughts maybe teaches people how to think and exactly what they want to learn by choice… well after all they pay for it.

According to Samantha, an employee in-training is not exactly “training” but so to speak in “trial mode”

where he’s given a pathetic salary and expected to out do himself within the job’s occupation… sometimes it even takes to kiss your boss’ ass to satisfy him, until you get your first promotion…

now the question that confuses me, “is it worth a year of slavery to get 50JD +  over your salary ?”  let it be a world standard that people abuse their workers since the beginning of time, I still believe it’s totally unfair that I work like a donkey, while some other dude get’s to work over my head JUST because he’s either older, or certified ( note that I’m talking about certification in case both experiences in the field are equal or null .

Steps to take the initiative and becoming the best employee..

it doesn’t limit to what’s included in your contract or asked from you to do.

as a “trainee” you should learn “everything” including what’s taught and what’s not..

1 – first of all learn what your boss does, learn how your company works, and learn everything possibly related to your work such as connection, aspects, subjects, related companies, similar environments, connections, etc..

2 – Kiss your boss’ ass, not literally but you should do everything he says with extra. for example he asked you for a cup of coffee, you should NOT forget to get him a tissue, or if in Summer a glass of water along with it.

same goes for cleaning this room, don’t limit to wiping a table or sweeping but clean the couches, and mop the floor.. etc etc…

3 – do NOT argue with your boss even if asks you to do something our of office that can be done with less expenses and time on the phone..  because maybe the BOSS has his reasons,   if he later re-thinks and starts a conversation only then you’re free to suggest or provide your opinion.

O__O Those are the basics.

Walking on The Edge of Fire

Imagine being fired for demanding respect…
this is just one of days for me at work.
and I’m finding this pretty amusing, when I come at 9:00 am which is my regular time
as agreed in my contract, I stop at a closed door and wait 30-60 minutes until either

my boss or his co-worker comes to open the door… with my polite instruction asking

them to be in time were accepted as highly offensive.
since they have reasons such as family problems or out of office duties.

Samantha, agreed that I should come at 9:30 instead.. and I used to come 9:30 until

it aggravated the boss.

with his authority-demonstrative tune he said I’m always late, forcing me to come

again and 9:00 2 times I found the office open at that time was happy …

but it always happen the next day I wait out, I tried to ask for the office key

politely. but that also was accepted as offensive attitude.

I kept coming at times varying between 9-9:30  mostly after 9:15 the office was open.

Today the boss was late again but his co-worker Samantha was waiting for me since

as I arrived Samantha told me that if I don’t come at 9:00 am from now forth I will be

fired for being late..

Dakara ( therefore ), I will be coming at 9:00 am and wait on the stair steep, or the

window edge till the office opens.

my precious time will be spent on waiting, because it’s 220 JD a month cheap…

What is my work at office?

Nothing much do the cleaning, serve coffee, go to other offices or airline companies

at some occasions  sometimes help other people for free.
I also volunteered in building a site for the office  http://alghadtravel.co.cc
which now seems totally left un touched. left on a free domain service.

What I was hired for?

I was typically hired for my Russian language ( which I don’t use at work )
My duties were to be the office representative, and (meet & greet) agent.

later on they decided I should work for ticketing and reservation and therefore I

studied all the materials I was given and expected to be assigned to a "Galileo"

training course… which didn’t happen since the last 2 long months…

I wake up everyday depressed that I’m going to be waiting in that empty cold hall

what wrong did I do to deserve this? does 220 a month worth the mistreatment that I

My bosses well know of my financial need, since I have 2 younger brothers and a mom to

take care of, aside that I have dropped education for this work; something I heavily

regret but I don’t want to sit on someone else’s money to pay my education.

I sold my Keyboard piano. and my inspiration lies in lost hope of having friends…
for perhaps their love can make up for the pain I go through.

where is this going? will I make it to my dream of being rich and independent? will I

get married to whom I love?

no one said life is cheap… I no longer recognize my face as I have become a spirit

that can be seen only in drawings… courage and pride lie at edge, the room of my life gets darker, the space of my imagination, spirit, and creativity slowly dissolves… without love I shall perish…  for I have no more love to give, spare, or cherish

Looking for

My co-worker is lately very tired and I feel sad for her, although she acts tough and strong all the time. right now she left without saying good bye.
I don’t know if I really made her upset, I tried my best doing what she asks me to do, but I’m simply too cautious of offering her help; I know she would reject it for not particular reason…

and be irritated by this; to day was one of a very boring day, I did some work.. and that was it.

I’m tired thou I”m studying online..

in other events my friends had his birthday coming today which I almost would have forgotten without Facebook.com.

I’m glad to have remembered and congratulated him, although.. I miss something great in my life… what is it that I’m looking for?
